Educational Opportunities

ONSITE PROGRAMMING:

Trying to decide where to take your class field trip this year? Consider The Texas Zoo! We offer  a variety of educational programs designed for that will make this year’s field trip an experience  your students will not forget. All of the Educational Programs offered at The Texas Zoo are TEKS and STAAR aligned.

 

 

Educational Field Trip Programs: When your school books a field trip (Aug-May) to The Texas Zoo they will receive a 30 minute educational Assembly Program (Included with admission), which focuses on the difference between mammals, birds, and reptiles. Students will also have the chance to see some of our animal ambassadors. This program can accommodate 120 students at a time.

 

Available Additional Programming (Not Included In Admission):

Explorer Class (Max 35 student per class): When you book the additional Explorer Class your group will receive a 45 minute hands-on classroom based lesson on one of the following topics.

  •  Adaptations(K-5th)
  •  Habitats(K-5th)
  •  Life Cycles(K-5th)
  •  Herbivore, Carnivore, Omnivore(K-5th)
  •  Food Chains/Ecosystems(K-5th)

Educational Zooventure (Max 35 student per class): This program is an in-depth 2 hour experience designed and created for your students’ grade level and educational needs. Some examples include watersheds and hydrological cycles, wetlands, or interacting ecosystems.

Guided Tours (Max 35 student per tour):: The Guided Tour at The Texas Zoo is a one hour front of scenes tour, guided by one of our education staff. This experience is a great way for larger groups to learn interesting facts about each animal in our collection. Pre-registration only.

 

OFFSITE PROGRAMMING:

 Can’t make it to the zoo? Let us come to you! The Texas Zoo offers a variety of different ways  for your group to experience the Animal Kingdom without ever leaving your school.

Outreach Programs: Outreaches allow us to bring the Animal Kingdom into your classroom and include 4-6 live animals, biofacts and great information. Outreaches can be scheduled for assemblies, science nights, classroom visits and can be customized to fit a topic of your choosing. As we tailor each outreach to your needs prices vary – Give us a call to book yours today.

Zoo To You: The Zoo to You program is an in-class or afterschool program that is one hour a week for four weeks. Zoo to You participants will experience the Animal Kingdom through live animal encounters, activities, and creative design.

Discovery Boxes : Choose one of our various educational boxes to rent by the week and bring the excitement of the animal kingdom to your classroom. Each box contains educational activities, animal artifacts, and an educational video to match the theme of the box. The boxes we have available for rent are:

  • Mystery Dinner Theatre:  Look at the animal artifacts to figure out which animals ate the food in the zoo’s kitchen.
  • All About Beaks and Feet:  Use the items within this box to learn how birds beaks and feet have adapted  for what they eat and where they live.
  • Feathers, Fur and Scales:  Use the items within this box to teach your students about the differences between birds, mammals and reptiles.
  • Design your own box:  Want to rent a Discovery Box but can’t find one that suits your needs? Let our Education Staff know and we can collaborate to create a Discovery Box just you!

 

Native Texas Traveling Exhibit:  For larger or special events, we can bring our Traveling Native Texas Exhibit to you. This exhibit features several of our Zoo Ambassadors and allows visitors to learn about and get a closer look at some of the wildlife that can be found in their backyard like Ocelots, Coyotes and more. ZOOSQUAD: HOME SCHOOL PROGRAMMING

 Join us August - May for Zoosquad, A program designed for your Homeschooler(Ages 4-12 Years), Zoosquad will meet on the second Thursday ( of every month (excluding summer months) at 10:30am for an  exciting science filled afternoon at the zoo. Pre-registration Required.

Zoo Friends Camp: June 20 - June 23, 9am-12pm,  

Ages 4-5

Fur, Feathers and Scales! OH MY! During this week of camp, your camper will learn all about mammals, birds, and reptiles.

  

Zoo Crew Camp: June 20 - June 23, 1pm-4pm,  

Ages 6-7

$75 pass holders & $90 general public      

Dive into the food chain and experience a zoo full of animal interdependence and adaptations. Whether your camper loves herbivores, carnivores or even omnivores, they’ll be able to learn all about the animals’ needs and habitats.

 

Reptiles Rock Camp: June 27 – June 30, 1-4pm,  

Ages 6-7

$75 pass holders & $90 general public    

Does your camper think turtles are turtley awesome? Do they leap at the thought of lizards? Join us for Reptiles Rock at The Texas Zoo for a week full of everything that makes reptiles rock.

  

Wildlife Warriors Camp: July 11 - July 14, 9am-4pm,  

Ages 8-9

$100 pass holders & $125 general public

Throughout this week of camp, your camper will be a warrior for wildlife. They will be able to take part in local conservation efforts, and learn all about the ecosystems that support our local animals.

 

Around the World Camp: August 1 - 4, 9am-4pm,  

Ages 8-9

Want to travel around the world without ever leaving Victoria? Come join us as we explore animal habitats and ecosystems from all over the globe!

 

Zoo Explorers Camp: June 13 - June 16, 9am-4pm,

Ever wonder what it takes to be a zoo keeper? Come to The Texas Zoo for an in-depth Keeper view of what is like to work at a Zoo.

 

Specialty Camps:



Girl Scout Summer Camp: July 18 - July 21 from 9am-4pm,

Brownies, Juniors, and Cadets

$135 pass holders & $155 general public

Calling all Brownies, Juniors and Cadets! During this camp your girl scout will have the opportunity to earn multiple badges while exploring the animal kingdom.

 

Girl Scout Overnight: July 21 – July 22 4pm-8am

Brownies, Juniors and Cadets

$35 pass holder & $45 general public

In addition to a full week of camp, your scout will have the opportunity to participate in a sleepover at the zoo. During this overnight scouts will have the opportunity to earn multiple badges as well as explore the zoo at night.

 

ZOOMU: The S.T.E.A.M. Team Visits The Texas Zoo July 25-July 29 from 9-12pm
Ages 3-9: $150 for each week of camp

Ages 10-13: $75 for each week of camp

Early drop-off will be available starting at 8AM for an extra charge of $10 per day.
There’s no place like home, and during this week of camp, S.T.E.A.M. team members will get to explore their very own safari at The Texas Zoo! Team members will learn about the differences between animals on the land and under the sea in this year’s ZOOMU camp which has long been a Victoria tradition. Design an ideal home for a tiger, a lion, or a special pair of otters. Learn about what animals like to do for fun! All of this and more will be explored in CDM’s final week of camp for 2016!
